Causes - Pelvic trauma
Trauma to the pelvic floor can be as a result of for example a direct blow to the coccyx, this can affect the alignment of the coccyx, the sacrum and the pelvis and the inflammation can set up a holding pattern in the pelvic floor over time. Frequently the lumbar spine and thoracic spine are involved too.
This can be diagnosed as coccydynia, it can be difficult to release and may need therapeutic exercise, manual therapy and breathing release techniques to stop daily habitual holding patterns feeding in to the tension.
Childbirth, a fall, road traffic accident and some sports such as cycling and horse riding are among the possible causes.
Evaluation of posture and seating are an important part of rehabilitation including looking at activities of daily living and evaluation of the workplace.
